DMU Framing: Selling to the Whole Decision Making Unit

In industrial sales you rarely convince one person. You convince a committee. DMU framing — structuring your message around the Decision Making Unit — is the difference between a promising conversation that stalls and a purchase order that gets signed.

Who sits in the Decision Making Unit

A typical Decision Making Unit contains six roles: the initiator who spots the need, the user who works with the product, the influencer with technical authority, the gatekeeper who controls access, the buyer who negotiates, and the decider who signs.

One person can hold several roles, but ignoring any of them is expensive. Deals rarely die at the top; they die with a quality engineer who was never given the data sheet they needed.

Framing the same offer for different motives

Each role buys a different outcome. Engineers buy technical certainty, procurement buys total cost of ownership and supply security, management buys risk reduction and growth. The product does not change; the frame does.

Build a one-page argument per role: specifications and certifications for technical stakeholders, landed cost and lead-time reliability for procurement, and a short business case for the signer. Give your internal champion the material to sell for you when you are not in the room.

Putting DMU framing to work

Map the unit early. Ask directly: who else reviews this, and what would they need to see? Record every name and role in your CRM, then align your outreach and retargeting so each role sees content written for them.

This is also a microtargeting advantage. Job-title-level targeting on LinkedIn and search lets you reach a plant manager and a purchasing director with different messages during the same buying cycle.

DMU framing turns a single pitch into a coordinated campaign inside the buyer's organisation. Map the roles, arm each one, and complex deals move at a noticeably faster pace.
